Individual receiving cash and/or food assistance may be eligible for services that will help with building skills for preparing, searching, and maintaining employment.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment & Training (SNAP E&T)
Do you receive SNAP food assistance (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)?
If you are an unemployed or underemployed able-bodied adult without dependents (ABAWD), you must complete a monthly work activity while receiving SNAP benefits.
While you can meet this work requirement with paid, unpaid, or in-kind work, you may also meet this work requirement with a SNAP E&T (SNAP Employment & Training) work activity assigned through Lucas County JFS.
How will a SNAP E&T work activity benefit me?
SNAP E&T will help you invest in a future with career opportunities that empower you to achieve your goals and improve your life. In partnership with OhioMeansJobs – Lucas County SNAP E&T activities can include:
- Basic Education such as GED or ESL classes
- Higher Education such as vocational education programs
- Individualized career planning
- WorkKeys certification
- Financial literacy planning
- Job search and application assistance
- Resume and interviewing guidance
- On-the-job work experience at a local non-profit
- Job retention services once employment is gained
- On a case-by-case basis, participants may be eligible for supportive services such as transportation allowances, a Chromebook, etc.
- Participants may be eligible to apply for financial assistance for training program costs, work clothing, etc.
How do I request to participate in SNAP E&T?
At your SNAP intake or recertification interview, you will be given the choice to enroll in SNAP E&T to meet the ABAWD work requirement. If interested, the JFS Eligibility Specialist will share your contact information with the Work Activities team who will reach out to you, or you can call 419-213-6314 and leave a voicemail asking for more information.
Ohio Works First (OWF)
Do you receive OWF cash assistance (Ohio Works First)?
If you have minor children in your home, you must complete a monthly work activity while receiving OWF cash assistance. While you can meet this work requirement with paid work, you may also meet this work requirement with a work activity assigned through Lucas County JFS.
How will an OWF work activity benefit me?
An OWF work activity will prepare you for a future with career opportunities that empower you to achieve your goals and improve your life. In partnership with community providers, OWF work activities can include:
- Work experience
- Soft skills development
- Job search and job readiness
- Career planning
- Education support
- Individualized case management
- Job retention services once employment is gained
- Eligible to apply for subsidized childcare while participating

At your OWF intake or recertification interview, you will be scheduled for a phone interview with a Work Activities Case Manager.
