TOLEDO, Ohio — The Board of Lucas County Commissioners and the 12 departments under the Board’s authority will remain open and operational during the federal government shutdown.
Several Lucas County departments, including the Department of Job & Family Services and the Department of Workforce Development, rely on federal funding to deliver essential programs and services to our community.
The Board is confident that there will be no interruption to these services and programs if the shutdown is resolved within 30 days.
A shutdown that lasts longer than 30 days would place a significant strain on Lucas County’s budget if local government becomes solely responsible for funding services such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Ohio Works First (OWF), Temporary Assistance to Need Families (TANF), and OhioMeansJobs Lucas County.
Residents enrolled in SNAP and OWF will receive their benefits for October. More than 30,000 children and more than 40,000 adults in Lucas County rely on SNAP benefits to ensure they have enough food each month.
Lucas County’s one-stop shop for business services, career services, and workforce training at 3737 W. Sylvania Ave. will also remain fully operational through October.
Lucas County sanitary sewer projects also will continue uninterrupted at this time.
“Lucas County will remain open and operational to continue serving our residents and businesses,” the Lucas County Commissioners said in a joint statement. “We are monitoring the situation at the federal and state levels and working with our department leadership to develop contingency plans for if the shutdown stretches beyond 30 days.”
