Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful envisions a world in balance; a world where everything that is created is a resource for something else, and every person takes responsibility for the resources they use, ensuring proper/sustainable disposal.
As a society, our goals should not be to limit our negative impact on the environment, but to have a positive impact. This is the only way to create a sustainable future.
This November is Correct Recycling Month
4.6 Million lbs of wrapping paper is produced each year in the U.S. The majority is NOT RECYCLABLE! This year - give the Earth a present and buy Recyclable Wrapping Paper.
Proceeds will help support our mission to improve Sustainability in Lucas County. Click below to order today!
Below is a list of events and special collections to help you improve your impact on our environment.
Candy Wrapper Recycling
Candy wrappers are not recyclable in curbside containers or at drop-off locations.
In 2019 Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful collected over 200 pounds of candy wrappers to send to a special processor for recycling.
Due to COVID-19 we expect Trick-or-Treating to be impacted this year, but this does not mean that people will not be eating candy!
Collection boxes are at all YMCA of Greater Toledo Branch Locations and the Toledo Zoo until November 15th.
Yard Signs / Campaign Signs
Political candidates create an average of 1 sign per 30 registered voters. With over 300,000 voters in Lucas County, that equals 10,000 signs per candidate.
Collection of these hard-to-recycle items will occur throughout Lucas and Wood Counties at the following locations:
- Lucas county Democratic Headquarters - 1817 Madison Ave. Toledo, OH 43604.
- Wood County Democratic Headquarters - 455 S. Main St. Bowling Green, OH 43402.
- City of Perrysburg Department of Public Services - 11980 Roachton Rd. Perrysburg OH 43551.
Flat screen T.V.s are pretty easy to recycle. This is not the case for older Box/Tube TVs. Older TVs are considered a hazardous waste and should not be sent to the landfill. This makes them very difficult to dispose of.
The Lucas County Solid Waste Management District will begin accepting these items beginning November 5th through their Household Hazardous Waste Program.
Call 419-213-2230 to make an appointment. Disposal Fee for both flat screen TVs and Box/Tube TVs is $.50 per pound.
The Great Pumpkin Pitch
It is estimated that of the 2 billion pounds of pumpkins grown in the US, 1.3 billion pounds end up the landfill, trapping their nutrients and creating Greenhouse Gasses.
This Halloween Season, Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful will be partnering with GoZero and Andre Farms to offer Pumpkin and Gourd Composting.
Drop-off Locations will be placed in the following locations from November 2nd - 13th.
- Lakewood Garden Marketplace - 530 Illinois Ave. Maumee - Sylvania Twp Hall - 4927 N. Holland Sylvania Rd. - Toledo GROWs - 900 Oneida St. Toledo
Styrofoam and Polystyrene
It is estimated that there are over 30,000 particles of plastic in Lake Erie per square mile and Styrofoam is a large contributor to this problem.
Styrofoam cannot be recycled locally and needs to be collected and sent to specialized recyclers. Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful will be scheduling drop-off locations for Styrofoam throughout Lucas County this holiday season.
Our first Styrofoam collection will be November 14th at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Maumee during their "America Recycles Day," event. This event will run from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
Additional collections will be announced for early 2021, so hold to your Holiday Styrofoam, and keep an eye out when we announce additional collections!
