The filing period to apply for the Homestead Exemption has passed. If you missed this deadline, but feel that you are eligible, please contact our office at (419) 213-4332/4336 to be put on the mailing list for next year's application which will be sent out January 4, 2016.
Homestead Exemption is a form of property tax relief and results in a reduction in Real Estate taxes for those who qualify. The exemption, which takes the form of a credit on property tax bills, allows qualifying homeowners to exempt $25,000 of the market value of their home from all local property taxes.
The 2015 filing period is January 5 through June 1.
If you are a senior citizen or disabled person and meet the following criteria, you are encouraged to enroll in the Homestead program:
- Applicants who are 65 or older. Please note: It does not matter what date you turn 65, as long as you turn 65 some time during the year.
- Applicants who are totally and permanently disabled. If disabled, the applicant is required to have their physician complete the certificate of disability form or submit a certificate from a state or federal agency.
- Applicants must own and occupy their home or mobile home or have ownership interest in it (i.e. land contract, lease purchase), as of January 1 of the application year.
- New applicants for 2015 must have a Total Household Adjusted Gross Income of $31,000 or less. For faster processing, please include a copy of your 2014 State of Ohio Income Tax filing - for income verification. Please note: Household income includes the income of the applicant and the applicant's spouse. Social Security income is exempt and is not considered income for the purpose of the Homestead Exemption.
