NW Ohio Regional
Terrorism Task Force Develops “Threat Level Red”
Guidelines 2/13/2003 1:00 p.m.
In the event the federal Department of Homeland Security
declares a Threat Level Red, its highest level of alert, the Northwest Ohio
Regional Terrorism Task Force is advising the public on potential actions and
precautions that may happen at the local level.
Individuals and families should familiarize themselves with
these potential actions, and prepare accordingly. The following actions are
possible in the event of a Threat Level Red:
- Schools across Lucas County will close until such time as the
task force can assess any imminent local threat occurring,
- It will be recommend that residents remain at home and
refrain from traveling via local roads as much as possible, · Access to
government facilities and public buildings will be limited,
- Workers will be advised to contact their employer to check
the status of business operations,
- The public will be requested to limit 911 calls to true
emergencies, as first responders are expected to be extremely
busy,
- The public will be asked to monitor local TV and radio for
the latest instructions and information.
“The general public should remain calm and not interpret this to
mean a red threat level is imminent,” said Toledo Fire Chief Mike Bell, chairman
of the Northwest Ohio Regional Terrorism Task Force. “We are simply planning for
possible activation of this alert level, so the decision-making process during
such an alert is quick and seamless in order to protect the public in the best
manner possible.”
Families and individuals should prepare a home disaster plan and
disaster kit in the event of such an emergency. Phone numbers and email
addresses of friends and family should be updated, and a three-day supply of
food and water should be assembled for each family member. Extra blankets,
flashlights, spare batteries, a radio and other essential items should be
included in the family disaster kit. Copies of vital personal papers and
information should also be stored in an accessible location. The American Red
Cross provides valuable emergency preparedness information in brochures that can
be obtained at local libraries, calling your local Red Cross chapter, or online
at www.redcross.org.
