399 Locating Utilities Before You Dig
| 399 Locating Utilities Before You Dig |
If you are planning to excavate on your property where utilities such as electric, water, telephone
and natural gas lines are buried; Ohio state law requires that you notify the affected utilities at
least two days prior to excavating. The utilities are required to locate their utilities for you
within two working days. This law aims at protecting you from possible serious injuries and from
liability if your digging damages any underground utilities.
You can dial one toll-free number to notify all utilities of your excavating project and request
that the utilities locate their underground facilities for you.
The toll-free number to call prior to your excavating work is 1-800-362-2764. That toll-free number
is operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Ohio Utility Protection Service will advise you
which utilities are in the area and which utilities they will notify.
