Licensing Your Dog
When?
All dogs over
3 months of age must have a new license every year by the 20th of January. The
license must be purchased immediately after you acquire a dog. Every registered
dog must at all times wear a valid license tag.
Where?
9 A.M. thru 5 P.M., Monday thru
Friday, at the Lucas County Auditor's Office, 1 Government Center; or 9 A.M. thru
4 P.M. at the Lucas County Dog Pound, 410 S. Erie Street, Toledo. Also several
other branch offices sell licenses.
Why?
It is required by law.
The
license on a dog's collar will identify the owner so that the dog can be
returned home.
If the dog wearing a license is turned into the Dog Warden's
office, the owner will be notified either in person or by phone, and certified
mail.
Without a Iicense, the impounded dog may be sold or destroyed after
three days.
Confining Your Dog
When?
At all times. All dogs must be
physically confined or restrained on the owner, keeper, or harborer's property
in the following ways:
- A. Leash
- B. Tether
- C. Supervision of a person
- D. Adequate fence
Costs of Ownership
- Daily food (about 1/2- 1 cup per 10 Ibs. wt.)
- Yearly preventative vaccines (from your veterinarian)
- Dog License (yearly by January 20)
- Proper grooming equipment
- Training equipment (leash and collar)
- Confinement equipment (fence for yard, chain, long lines, properly fitted
gates, cage, etc.)
- Boarding kennel fees
- Funds for emergency hospital care (**seldom needed for dogs who are
properly confined)
- Don't forget toys and chew bones
- Most of all . . . your daily sacrifice of time for play, exercise, and
obedience training.
- Secure enclosure - SUCH CONFINEMENT MUST PREVENT ESCAPE.
Where?
Anywhere in the state of
Ohio.
Why?
To protect your dog.
To show your neighbors that you respect their
property and their privacy.
To comply with state law.
The penalty for
failure to properly confine a dog that is not dangerous or vicious can be up to
$250.00 in fines and imprisonment for up to 30 days.
You are liable for any
damage your dog may do to property, people, or livestock.

Buying and Selling/Placing Any Dog
Did You Know?
In Ohio, whenever a dog's
ownership is changed, such transfer must be recorded on forms provided by the
county auditor's office.
FAILURE TO TRANSFER OWNERSHIP IS PUNISHABLE BY LAW.
Temperament Statement
Did You Know?
Upon request of the new owner, the
previous owner must give a written statement to the new owner which describes
the dog's behavior and temperament.
Training
PLEASE
Do
your dog and your neighbors a favor . . .
- Train your dog thoroughly.
- Confine him outdoors alone only for brief periods, in such a way that he
cannot leave your yard.
- Exercise and play with your dog daily.
- Keep him quiet.
- Give him proper shelter, food, and plenty of water.
- Give him regular veterinary care.
ONLY THESE PROCEDURES WILL ALLOW HIM THE CHANCE TO
REALLY BE YOUR BEST FRIEND.
