Licensing Your Dog

When?

All dogs over 3 months of age must have a new license every year by the 20th of January. The license must be purchased immediately after you acquire a dog. Every registered dog must at all times wear a valid license tag.

Where?

9 A.M. thru 5 P.M., Monday thru Friday, at the Lucas County Auditor's Office, 1 Government Center; or 9 A.M. thru 4 P.M. at the Lucas County Dog Pound, 410 S. Erie Street, Toledo. Also several other branch offices sell licenses.

Why?

It is required by law.
The license on a dog's collar will identify the owner so that the dog can be returned home.
If the dog wearing a license is turned into the Dog Warden's office, the owner will be notified either in person or by phone, and certified mail.
Without a Iicense, the impounded dog may be sold or destroyed after three days.

Confining Your Dog

When?

At all times. All dogs must be physically confined or restrained on the owner, keeper, or harborer's property in the following ways:

  • A. Leash
  • B. Tether
  • C. Supervision of a person
  • D. Adequate fence

Costs of Ownership

  • Daily food (about 1/2- 1 cup per 10 Ibs. wt.)
  • Yearly preventative vaccines (from your veterinarian)
  • Dog License (yearly by January 20)
  • Proper grooming equipment
  • Training equipment (leash and collar)
  • Confinement equipment (fence for yard, chain, long lines, properly fitted gates, cage, etc.)
  • Boarding kennel fees
  • Funds for emergency hospital care (**seldom needed for dogs who are properly confined)
  • Don't forget toys and chew bones
  • Most of all . . . your daily sacrifice of time for play, exercise, and obedience training.
  • Secure enclosure - SUCH CONFINEMENT MUST PREVENT ESCAPE.

Where?

Anywhere in the state of Ohio.

Why?

To protect your dog.
To show your neighbors that you respect their property and their privacy.
To comply with state law.
The penalty for failure to properly confine a dog that is not dangerous or vicious can be up to $250.00 in fines and imprisonment for up to 30 days.
You are liable for any damage your dog may do to property, people, or livestock.
If your dog chases people, will bite people, or is a breed commonly known as a pit bull, see the pamphlet for vicious or dangerous dog laws.

Buying and Selling/Placing Any Dog

Did You Know?

In Ohio, whenever a dog's ownership is changed, such transfer must be recorded on forms provided by the county auditor's office.
FAILURE TO TRANSFER OWNERSHIP IS PUNISHABLE BY LAW.

Temperament Statement

Did You Know?

Upon request of the new owner, the previous owner must give a written statement to the new owner which describes the dog's behavior and temperament.

Training

PLEASE
Do your dog and your neighbors a favor . . .

  • Train your dog thoroughly.
  • Confine him outdoors alone only for brief periods, in such a way that he cannot leave your yard.
  • Exercise and play with your dog daily.
  • Keep him quiet.
  • Give him proper shelter, food, and plenty of water.
  • Give him regular veterinary care.

ONLY THESE PROCEDURES WILL ALLOW HIM THE CHANCE TO REALLY BE YOUR BEST FRIEND.
